DW Increases Broadcasting Hours to Afghanistan & Serbia By Martin Schoech October 30, 1998
According to two DW press releases, which can be found at
http://www.dwelle.de/dw/extern/presse1/pm248.html
http://www.dwelle.de/dw/extern/presse1/pm243.html
Deutsche Welle increases Pushtu and Dari news for 10 minutes and adds another 30 min programm (Oct. 27).
Translated quote from DW press release :
"Radio is Afghanistan (in contrary to TV) an officially allowed media. One of the courses is the usage of that media by the Taliban with their "Radio Scharia" in order to promote their repressive politics. Receivers are cheap and in a Country with an alphabetization rate of only 10% they are even wide spread. A high number of listeners can be assumed."
The Deutsche Welle even increased its transmissions in Serbian to 120 min per day (Oct. 21) due to the represive media laws in Serbia, which results in the absence of state independent informations.
